Upholstery Services
I believe that cheap, fashionable chairs are not substitute for good quality, treasured furniture which deserves to be revived and updated, not thrown out and replaced with inferior quality. We work with dining room chairs, armchairs, sofas, occasional chairs, pouffes, piano stools and footstools. We work with modern materials such as foam and wadding and also with traditional materials including webbing, springs, hessian and horsehair.
Upholstery is the art of taking a piece of furniture such as a kitchen/dining room chair, armchair or sofa and giving it not only a new look but making any repairs or replacements to the underlying soft furnishing materials and structure of the support for the upholstered parts. This includes:
- Stripping back to a frame
- Assessing the integrity of the materials
- Replacing springs where necessary
- Tying down new and existing springs
- Replacing webbing where appropriate
- Replacing softening and contouring materials such as foam, wadding, felt, etc
- Adding a fire-retardant barrier fabric
- Working with fabric, hand cutting and attaching it with skill and an eye for design
- Finishing the final piece with decorative tacks/nails, braiding or by hand sewing using a range of stitching techniques
To be an upholsterer, one needs to be proficient in all these skills and be able to interact with customers offering them a service that involves them throughout each upholstery project.
