ABOUT US

Reupholstery Northern Ireland

I believe that cheap, fashionable chairs are no substitute for good quality, treasured furniture which deserves to be revived and updated, not thrown out and replaced with inferior quality.

About Victoria Scott

I am a creative, innovative person, always keen to learn new skills. At Ulster University, I studied Art and Design and went on to study Interior Design and Photography. After University, taking a job as a sign writer, I learned the techniques for gilding and lettering. I began taking an interest in the art of upholstery following a poorly thought out purchase of an over-priced sofa, only to throw it out two years later as it turned out to be constructed from plywood and cheap fabric.

I enrolled at the Northern Regional College, learned the necessary skills and techniques to use the correct tools and equipment. I learned how to rip out and strip back pieces of furniture to their bare frames and then rebuild, re-upholster, revive and restore it.

I discovered how satisfying it was to take a well-loved piece and breathe new life into it, giving it a second chance. I don’t subscribe to a throw-away society with short-lived and disposable furniture.

The traditional crafts I have learned include working with coil and tension springs, hessian, coir, horsehair and webbing as well as working with modern materials such as foam, wadding and needled felt. I bring my interest in colour, design and textiles to bear when I work on a project, creating an individual, artisanal and one of a kind bespoke piece such as the restoration of an antique corner chair.

The Gryphon Upholstery Approach

Gryphon Upholstery was set up in 2018.  I chose the name because, in mythology, gryphons were known for guarding treasure and priceless possessions. I realised that I had become busy with work commissioned by family and friends and realised that there was certainly a requirement for a good quality bespoke re-upholstery service. Customers believe the same as I do, that well-made furniture that means something to us should be given a second chance. Often, older furniture is sturdier and better constructed than its modern equivalent.

I work with clients to get an idea of what they want me to achieve. We discuss all the options, agree a transformation plan, price and deadline. I send my clients regular updates on progress and involve them in any decisions that need to be made along the way. After all, each piece is unique and customer involvement and satisfaction is at the heart of what I want to produce.
