Getting started with the wingback chair
We reduce the wingback chair to its frame and examine the show wood at the legs as the client has asked for a more natural wood finish. We stripped and sanded back the legs to the bare wood. The support structure for a wingback chair is vital so we examine the integrity of the seat foam and webbing and find that these need replaced as they are sagging and lack structure.
Create the chair seat
We replace the original webbing with brand new 2 inch webbing, stretched and tacked in place by hand. To create a comfortable seat, we make a pad of carefully shaped foam at the customer’s request we integrate this into the frame rather than a separate box cushion.
Fire retardant materials
It is absolutely essential that all upholstery meets the fire safety standards so we are very careful to make sure that all upholstery fabrics used are fire retardant. Next, we secure the foam with a layer of fire retardant calico, hand tacking it in place. After this, we add extra layers of wadding for a really comfortable seat. We recover all soft areas of the chair with the same liner of fire retardant calico.
The wood
At the outset, we had previously prepped the show wood and so we give the legs a final sand finish with a couple of coats of clear varnish to give a natural sheen.
The top upholstery fabric
The customer chose for the top fabric a striking black velour. It is used to cover all areas: the seat the inside back, inside arms, outside arms and lastly the outside back. The final fabric is cut and fixed in place, the back panel secured with specially matched black gimp pins.
Finishing touches for the wingback chair
We cover the underside of the seat with a panel of calico, this is essential for keeping everything dust-free and completes the covering of the entire frame. The customer chose chrome decorative pins to provide a pleasing contrast to the dark fabric on this wingback chair.
