Getting started on the footstool reupholstery
The first step in the footstool reupholstery project is to remove the four legs. We decide to sand and paint them white for a fresh look using eggshell paint. A layer of clear varnish is applied for extra durability.
The stool is stripped back and the base, foam and stuffings examined. The base wood is cracked at one side so we cut a new base from reinforced plywood. The foam is viable so we reuse the foam, adding extra wadding for softness.
Using fire retardant materials
We cover the foam and wadding with fire-retardant calico, fixed in place using a staple gun. It is absolutely essential that all upholstery meets the fire safety standards so we are very careful to make sure that all upholstery fabrics used are fire retardant. More wadding gives a lovely smooth surface for the top fabric. We measure and centre the fabric, in this case patterned poplin.
Making the finishing touches to the footstool reupholstery
We secure the fabric with tacks and staples and cover the underneath of the base with calico. We reattach the finished legs.
This is just one of the chairs, benches and stools which we have reupholstered recently. Click on the link below to see some of our other projects.
