WHAT WE DO

Bespoke Reupholstery Northern Ireland

Clients are involved at each stage of this bespoke reupholstery service and are encouraged to supply their own thoughts and ideas. I want their bespoke piece to be unique to them and for them to enjoy their furniture for many years to come.

Upholstery and reupholstery takes skill, care and an in-depth knowledge of materials, techniques and a flair for design. We arrange a meeting with clients to discuss the project at the outset. Here we discuss type and quantity of fabric and finishing options that are required for the final look that the client wishes to achieve and work out an estimate for their consideration. Often traditional upholstery skills involve taking a piece of upholstered furniture back to its bare bones, assessing its condition and rebuilding it from the frame up. Sprung furniture is checked for the condition of springs and the materials, such as linen cord which keeps them in place and fixed accordingly. Webbed furniture is assessed the same way and a thorough knowledge of working with hessian, horsehair, webbing and stitching is all required.

A calico base and softening materials such as linterfelt, wool and wadding are added as needed prior to the top fabric being fitted and tacked in place by hand. Often a piece is finished with hand-applied braiding, piping or decorative studding or by hand stitching. More modern pieces can be stripped down the same way, assessed and materials such as foam and wadding may be replaced where needed.

If the integrity of the original materials is intact, it can be re-used with the addition of a fire retardant barrier fabric as laid out in Fire Safety legislation. I prefer to re-use stuffings where possible and always use a good quality fire retardant calico as barrier fabric as it is strong, durable and traditional. The top fabric is shaped, fitted, fixed in place and trimmed by hand. It is secured with tacks or staples and finished to the customer’s specifications.  A protective layer of calico or hessian is hand tacked to the underside to finish off the whole piece.

From the outset of each project, the Gryphon Upholstery approach is to work with clients to offer them a broad range of choices relating to style, structure and finish. I offer advice and guidance about choosing the right stuffings, fabric and finish for their piece of furniture. We discuss the cost of each step and agree a price prior to commencement of the work. Clients are involved at each stage and are encouraged to supply their own thoughts and ideas. I want their bespoke piece to be unique to them and for them to enjoy their furniture for many years to come.
