Getting started on the Parker Knoll Armchair
We strip back the Parker Knoll armchair to the bare wooden frame, removing all the old tacks and staples. Next we strip back the show wood on the arms and legs and sand it down for a smooth finish. We wanted a natural look and so we gave it several coats of natural beeswax. This has the advantage that, over the years to come, the chair can be waxed again and again to bring out the natural grain of the wood.
The springs
We check the integrity of the springs to see if they need replaced. They’re in great condition but the coverings are worn so we create new calico sleeves for the existing springs.
The foam, wadding and box cushion
We check the foam in the seat and back of the Parker Knoll armchair, however, it has lost its bounce and solidity. And so we cut a new box cushion pad (3inch) and a seat back from fresh foam (2inch) and shape it to fit the frame.
In order to give this armchair a comfortable seat, we add wadding around the specially shaped foam. Also, we add layers of wadding to the seat back and cover this with a layer of fire retardant calico. It is absolutely essential that all upholstery meets the fire safety standards so we are very careful to make sure that all upholstery fabrics used are fire retardant.
Next, we make a cover with a fitted zip for the box cushion. We create strands of piping made from the reverse side of the fabric for contrast.
The final touches to the Parker Knoll Armchair
Finally, we cover the front of the seat back and fix it in place with upholstery tacks. It is vital to take into account the pattern repeat on material and we place the fabric to give a pleasing design. We measure the rear back panel and carefully cut and stretch the fabric to create a smooth wrinkle-free back. The side seams are hand sewn with an invisible ladder stitch. Last of all, we set the box cushion in place.
